What a disappointment. Several times in the past few weeks I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the apparent reasonableness of Forum Communications columnist Rob Port’s published opinions. You know, the kind of responsible journalism that has kept America free.
But now he has retreated to blatant shilling for Big Oil and Big Coal. In step with neo-GOP fashion, Port barrages his readers with blatant misnomers and misstatements.
For instance, instead of acknowledging our climate catastrophe as a root cause of already-inflated prices for the most-polluting fuels, Port wants to blame an “environmental movement.” And he (arrogantly and wrongly) dismisses the lifesaving science for mitigating this catastrophe as “ideology.”
Our man-made climate catastrophe has already unleashed overwhelming human suffering that will continue growing more devastating even if we magically stop all carbon pollution today.
How shameful is it, then, to contrive to further delay the replacement of highly toxic fuels with immeasurably cleaner energy sources? Grappling with Russia’s war and even with viral pandemics pales in comparison to surmounting our climate catastrophe, the worst disaster to ever confront humankind. Advocating for any delay in remedial action is unconscionable.
