There is currently a bill backed by some members of the North Dakota Legislature that would close the state pension plan for future hires of state and local workers. This would hurt current and future public employees and local economies in North Dakota. There is also a bill being introduced that would improve the pension plan and keep it in place for North Dakota public employees who have earned it.
I want to commend Senators Sean Cleary and Dick Dever and Rep. Josh Boschee for introducing a bill to stabilize pensions for our state and local workers. Cleary, Dever and Boschee understand the importance of our state's pension plan in recruiting and retaining dedicated public servants. More importantly, they are showing fiscal responsibility by stabilizing the popular plan that injects millions of dollars into our local economies. The bill proposed by Cleary, Dever and Boschee will address long-term concerns about the pension plan for under one-fifth of the cost of the financially reckless $5.5 billion proposal to close down the pension plan for future hires. And it does this while preserving the important benefit for the future.
