What is happening to America when we have small radical groups forcing their views onto the American public? They want to rewrite history in the image they desire and the rest of us be damned. When anyone speaks up against what they have decided is “the way it will be” the term “racist” is hung around their neck.

What happened to the democratic way of voting on change? Fine, if the majority of Americans want to take down the Washington Monument so be it. But for a small percentage of vocal radicals to demonize him and get their way is wrong.

Even here in North Dakota we have an “over the hill” former TV commentator ranting about the evils of a Democrat president who upheld his oath of office to the best of his ability and a former state elected official blathering in their weekly columns about the wrongs done to Native Americans over 125 years ago.

What is next for America? You only have to look back to the 1960s and ’70s when Mao Zedong, chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, started the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, killing untold numbers of his countrymen as he waved his “Little Red Book.” Chinese from every walk of life were put to death or sent to reeducation camps when denounced by the Red Guards. According to estimates, more than 1.5 million Chinese were killed during the Cultural Revolution with more millions suffering imprisonment, torture or general humiliation! Mao and his Red Guards urged the nation to rid itself of the “Four Olds:” Old customs, old culture, old habits and old ideas (sound familiar?)

Or how about “reeducation,” as it was implemented in Vietnam as both a means of revenge and a sophisticated technique of repression and indoctrination? Forced into reeducation camps, never tried or convicted of any crime. After the fall of Saigon in April 1975, hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese men, former officers in the armed forces, religious leaders, former employees of America or the old government, were rounded up for reeducation.

Can’t happen here? Six months ago I would have agreed with you, but now one wonders. As Ben Franklin reportedly said “... it is a Republic if you can keep it.”
