In response to two recent opinion pieces in the Herald.
First, the piece by columnist Lloyd Omdahl (Nov. 13: “Honoring a guardsman’s request”). The proper use of the National Guard is certainly a valid question, which raises an even larger issue. Would it not be more fair to all citizens to implement the draft to staff our combat forces?
All citizens sharing equally in those forces where loss of life is a strong possibility would very likely influence our decision as a nation as to whether or not we should go to war.
Which members of Congress and our administration have ever served in the military?
Also, the idea presented in a Herald letter by Mr. John Cyr (Thursday, Nov. 14: “Use Legacy Fund to boost doctors in N.D.”) deserves front-page coverage. What a great idea. Which officials do we contact to show our support?
