Letter: Board appreciates work of Herald, FCC

To the editor,

On behalf of the board of directors of United Way, I want to express our sincere appreciation for the strong support that Forum Communications Co. and the Grand Forks Herald have provided to United Way.

We greatly appreciate the news coverage we receive from the Herald, the financial contributions from the Herald and its employees, and the considerable free advertising the Herald has given us. All of these contribute to our success helping our community fight poverty.

We apologize for the comments made by Pat Berger, the president and CEO of United Way, that Publisher Korrie Wenzel referred to in his Thursday column about the Herald's future ("Still here, reporting the news").

It's frustrating for our community to lose the local presence of WDAZ-TV, but that was not a reason to lash out.

The Grand Forks Herald has been a vital part of the Grand Forks community since 1879, and many of us especially remember the heroic efforts of the Herald to publish during the flood of 1997. We appreciate the Herald's commitment to this community, and we look forward to continuing to work with the Herald as partners for the good of the community.
