Letter: E15 needed for summer driving

To the editor,

The summer travel season is upon us, and Minnesotans are traveling all across the state. However, gas prices are again near $3 per gallon, and many are looking for any way to save money at the pump.

One popular strategy is by fueling up with more biofuels. A good example is E15, a 15 percent ethanol blend available in 29 states that costs 5 to 10 cents less per gallon. It also burns cooler and cleaner than traditional gas. This saves consumers money, while helping the environment at the same time.

Regulations put in place by D.C. lawmakers currently prohibit most vehicles from using E15 from June 1 to Sept. 15. President Trump has voiced his opposition to this outdated regulation, along with his intent to end it, making E15 available to year-round for drivers across the country.

Please, encourage our U.S. senators and representatives in Washington to press the EPA to make the fix happen, an effort being led by U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue. If he can stand strong, we can finally put an end to this regulation before the summer driving season is over, and put more affordable, cleaner fuel options on the market.
