There has been a great deal of back and forth between North Dakota Republican gubernatorial candidates Doug Burgum and Wayne Stenehjem on the state of the North Dakota economy. A recent editorial in The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead states, "Unlike his opponent, Stenehjem seems to better understand the cyclical nature of oil and ag."

These two key industries are the backbone of our state's economy, and having a governor with a deep knowledge of these sectors is critically important.

As a legislator, Stenehjem had first-hand experience managing the tumultuous nature of commodity prices, and he knows (as Herald readers and I do) that oil and crop prices will rebound.

As attorney general, he has successfully fought against federal regulations such as the Clean Power Plan and the Waters of the United States rule, which would have crippled the energy and agriculture industries.

What we need is a leader with a strong grasp of our state's economic foundations, the ability to work with our legislators to tackle the challenges we face today and a proven track record of improving the lives of North Dakotans. Stenehjem is that leader, and I hope Herald readers will join me in electing him as our next governor on June 14.
