To the editor,
I believe in a free press. I do not consider the press the enemy of the people.
As a former president of the Grand Forks City Council I never resented the scrutiny of the press. Almost always I found the press thoughtful and helpful. If the press disagreed with a policy I supported, I accepted that as an integral part of our democracy as written in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The press is not the enemy. The enemy is any public servant who lies to the people.
