I think I am missing some of the pieces of the puzzle regarding the parking lot that the Grand Forks School District would like to build for Central High School students.
According to what I have read in the Herald, the school leases parking spaces in the ramp (many of which aren't used) for about $33,000 a year. I assume this has been the practice for some time and that the lease money is paid to the city.
If that's the case, then it appears that it would be fiscally responsible for the school district to own its parking lot.
I don't know how much it costs to build and maintain a parking lot, but 10 years of leasing would be $330,000!
How many businesses would lease something for $33,000 a year when they could invest that money in property that they would own?

I would be interested in learning more about the pros and cons of leasing unused parking spaces versus owning a parking lot that will be used by students and staff. Can anyone in City Hall or the School Distict's office help me out?
