When shall we honor Sitting Bull? On the anniversary of his death, Dec. 15? On a beautiful day in the fall, the season of his birth?
How shall we honor Sitting Bull? By reading the words of another illustrious Dakotoan, Vine Deloria? By considering the beauty, majesty and ecological benefits of bison (pte oyate) on the landscape? By facing the tragedies of past and dreaming up better futures together?
By changing the North Dakota highway-sign logos, which currently depict a caricature of Sitting Bull's killer as a stand-in for the state and federal governments?
By honoring the treaties and returning the land? By calling for the release of Leonard Peltier?
So many options.
