LETTER: Heitkamp wears blinders on key issues

North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp's active for promotion of the Keystone XL Pipeline is a disappointment for progressive North Dakotans who have supported her since was our attorney general.

North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp's active for promotion of the Keystone XL Pipeline is a disappointment for progressive North Dakotans who have supported her since was our attorney general.

If constructed, the Keystone XL will carry highly toxic and dangerous oil-tar sludge through the center of the United States, with very little benefit and much potential harm. Unfortunately, Heitkamp has failed before as a progressive on environmental and health issues, including her advocacy for weak controls on coal-fired power plants and her service as a paid lobbyist for the tanning industry.

Of course, we can't expect our other U.S. senator, John Hoeven, to work to protect the environment or human health when such protections get in the way of profits. For Republicans, profits come first.

But in this case, the profits derived from Keystone XL will go to Canadians after a token number of construction and maintenance jobs are doled out to Americans.

If Congress approves the Keystone Pipeline, I very much hope President Barack Obama has the good sense and courage to veto it. I regret that Heitkamp will not support him. If the Keystone is completed, it will become a national albatross and a monument to the folly of our addiction to even the worst of fossil fuels.
