To the editor,

Fifty years ago, as an undergraduate biology major at UND, I was provided an opportunity to develop and conduct some "research" under the guidance of professors. That experience was among several that led me to a fulfilling life and a professional career as a biologist.

Mike Jacobs and Suezette Bieri have generously established a significant endowment to support research and creative activity by undergraduates in the UND College of Arts and Sciences-in perpetuity.

Such a gift will go a long way to ensure that students in diverse disciplines will be able to participate in the world of discovery along with their scholar/mentors. Quality learning experiences will benefit generations of UND students. The reasons that UND professors are both scholars and teachers should become more apparent to those that doubt that to be important.

Increasingly, all public universities will rely on such private funds to thrive. Jacobs and Bieri cannot be thanked enough for their lasting legacy to strengthen the core of UND.
