LETTER: Ethics requires certain restrictions on personal freedom

We have become a "me" society. We are so concerned about individual freedoms, we value them above freedoms of our fellow citizens. This "me" attitude has compromised our ethics, responsibilities and respect for each other. It endangers our future.

We have become a "me" society. We are so concerned about individual freedoms, we value them above freedoms of our fellow citizens. This "me" attitude has compromised our ethics, responsibilities and respect for each other. It endangers our future.

Democracy will not work without responsibility. Our freedoms must not be at the expense of subgroups (unborn, elderly, women, men) in society.

Ethically, our freedom to act ends when another life is compromised. And no matter how much we wish it otherwise, human life begins at conception and continues until natural death. I challenge anyone to prove otherwise.

To make our country a peaceful, happy place, we must start with ethics. We must acknowledge when we do something wrong and vow not to do it again. Sure, we'll slip up sometimes, but we must strive to be better.

Part of this is to respect each other. Women must respect men. Men must respect women. Adults must respect children. Children must be taught to respect adults. All people should revere the elderly above all other age group because of their experience and wisdom.

More than anything, we must respect life.

When you are not sure if an action is right, ask yourself two questions. Does the action result in negative emotions or positive emotions? If the answer is negative, it is probably the wrong thing to do. If the answer is positive, it is probably the right thing to do. Double check your answer by asking this: Would God approve? If the answer is no, don't do it.
