To the editor,
The acts of terror in Charlottesville were driven by bigotry and hate that hurt not only the community in which they took place but all of us across the nation.
We are a much stronger country when we embrace diversity as one of the greatest strengths our society, or any society, can achieve. Our country has been a showcase to the world of the vitality, creativity, and harmony, made possible by a culturally and ethnically diverse society. Why destroy this?
We need to continue to do everything within our means to ensure that these and other societal issues remains constructive, civil, and respectful.
As an intellectual community, we understand the importance of meaningful dialogues and courageous conversations that help students and the community wrestle with issues and resolve challenges, and do so in ways that are respectful and build community.

Learning acceptance of others is a priority. Practicing cultural tolerance. Being positive about this. Positive thinking inspires positive feelings. Sow seeds of hope. Show love to others. Love is infectious and the greatest healing energy. All should feel welcomed in our community.
As people migrated as early as the 1750s for work here, and built new lives, they had to learn to get along and respect each other's cultural and religious beliefs as they discovered together how to create a new community based on love, understanding, tolerance, and acceptance.
As a community member, I ask everyone to remember the early settlers who emigrated, and to bear in mind our commitment to serve as a safe and welcoming environment for all who are presently here and those who will come to call this home.
