I've seen reports that the media is bad for America. They are the fake news, the enemy of the people, liberal-swayed propaganda machine, on and on.

I subscribe to over a dozen different news sources from liberal to conservative to middle of the road as unbiased as can be done nowadays. I've seen a lot of people say that the media, as a whole, is lying to the people and trying to control what they think. I don't believe that. We choose our sources of news based on our viewpoints.

One thing I can tell from everything I read is that the right thinks the left is lying, the left thinks the right is lying, half the people believe the media, half vilify it. Here's what I know: all news sources are not created equal. There are those that present the news in an unbiased way, some that lean one way or the other, and then there are some that completely distort a story to only show one side or viewpoint. The trick is sorting out which sites and sources are which.

We, as a people, need to employ critical thinking and ask ourselves what is the publisher of this news getting out of it? I want to be informed. I want to know what other people think. I want to engage in intelligent discussions about the topics that matter to people, whether I agree with them or not.

The only way we get that information is through the media. We have to choose who to believe and who not to and ask ourselves, every time, is this story giving me information or is it trying to sway my opinion to the writer's viewpoint. Being mindful of what we take in as information is more important now than it ever has been.

Do some media sources lie? Yes. Do some distort the facts for their own agendas? Yes. But it's up to us to weed out those lies and distortions to form an educated opinion from the information that's presented that is true and accurate.

How we leave this world for our descendants is going to be based on the decisions we make. The decisions we make are going to be based on the information we believe. Chose wisely.
