LETTER: At UND, 'there are no underperforming programs left'

Beginning in July, UND will have a new president. We welcome him and are excited to help his plans become reality. It will be a fresh start after a very long winter.

Beginning in July, UND will have a new president. We welcome him and are excited to help his plans become reality. It will be a fresh start after a very long winter.

That said, before the new president arrives, there are several major decisions that must be made. These decisions cannot wait until the new president is invested. In fact, they need to be made in less than a month.

UND's budget deficit is real, and from the look of things, it will get much worse before it gets better. This is our campus reality, and we have to deal with it head on.

As we go forward, it would serve everyone well to remember that the low-hanging fruit was picked years ago. Every program in existence at UND is vibrant and vital. There are no underperforming programs left. Those were done away with before the halcyon days of the oil boom.

The unfortunate reality is that at least one and possibly more programs will be cut in the next six months. All of these cuts will be to programs that are useful, needed and well-respected.

The value of any of the programs on the chopping block is not in question. Neither is the reality that cuts must be made.

I doubt if anyone in state government thinks they possess the wisdom of Solomon. Yet the choices they have to make will require that level of care and insight.
