FARGO -- "Invest in your Valley!" That's the slogan of a popular and catchy local commercial. Its goal, I suppose, is to promote economic development and to show the pride that residents have in their communities. And I have to admit it makes me want to help make my community a better place to live.
What about you, Herald reader? Does this statement make you feel like you want to help improve your neighbors' well-being?
At a time when community leaders ask this of you, one company -- American Crystal Sugar -- has shrugged its responsibilities and have locked out 1,300 loyal and hard-working employees.
Four months later, sides have been taken, ultimatums given and gag orders placed. It has become a propaganda war. Most, if not all Herald readers likely think this is old news and just want it over.
But while the average Joe might not think this labor dispute affects them, I would disagree. There is a direct correlation between labor unions and middle-class income. And no matter how you feel about unions, remember that they were formed to protect the working class.

So, the next time Herald readers cross that picket line or condemn those "union thugs," they might want to ask themselves, "How have I helped end this labor dispute and make my community a better place to live? Will I invest in my Valley?"
