Q. Can you tell me how the NCAA Committee of Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct started?

A. You may be looking for a big bang theory on this, or for some "enough is enough" event that initiated this committee, but it wasn't like that. We really wanted to see an intelligent group of people present the NCAA's ideals about sportsmanship. We wanted to celebrate the examples of excellence in sportsmanship around the country, and that is why we present the Sportsmanship Award.

The start of this committee was not reactionary.

Q. What is the process for deciding who wins the sportsmanship award?

A. A school needs to go through its conference office. There is a link on the NCAA Web site. The conference office will narrow it down to one male and one female. Then the nominations are sent to the committee.

They pore over all of the nominations and decide who the recipients will be.

Q. Is it the job of the committee to become involved in situations where fans are out of control?

A. No. We are not watchdogs. The members of the committee represent the NCAA's conscience about these issues. The members also are in charge of coming up with ideas and etiquette that we consider appropriate ethical behavior.

I think it's different in D1 than it is in other divisions, but they represent the NCAA's attitude on sportsmanship. We also publish success stories and present good examples that schools can follow to better their situations.

The members came up with the tool kit on how to better sportsmanship. We want folks to know that information. We want athletics as a whole to maintain that family atmosphere.

Stephanie Liden, a UND journalism student and Herald intern, conducted the interview.
