Dr. Mark Siegel, Grand Forks, letter: Altru reinvests to improve health care in GF

GRAND FORKS -- After reading a recent column by another general surgeon, I felt compelled to express my views ("Nothing healthy about GF's hospital politics," Page A4, April 20).

I came to Grand Forks as a newly trained general surgeon in 1978. It has been my privilege to provide care for this community for more than 30 years.

People often ask me why someone born and raised in sunny California chose to stay in Grand Forks. My answer always comes back to two main points.

First, the medical practice and care rendered in Grand Forks is excellent. At times I think the community takes for granted the outstanding service given by the team at Altru. When I attend national meetings and visit with colleagues from all over the United States, I always come back realizing how good things are in the Grand Forks medical community.

Altru, an integrated community-owned and directed facility with physician leadership, clearly is at the forefront of medicine today. I think this explains Altru Health System's growth. It truly is a dynamic place for physicians to practice.

Our recent affiliation with Mayo was further proof of the high regard for Altru as a health system on the national level.

As to the issue of greed, every dollar earned by Altru Health System is reinvested in bringing the latest and best medical programs and equipment to benefit our community. I also think Altru can be very proud of the role it plays in education, providing opportunities for training at all levels.

Second, Grand Forks is a wonderful community, safe and family oriented, a place where day-to-day life is pleasant with neighbors who lend a hand when help is needed. My first year here, I had no idea about driving on icy and snow-packed roads, and I remember strangers helping to push my car out of a snow bank. I also remember that a stranger took me to the hospital on his snowmobile so I could attend to my patients.

UND is a first-rate institution that brings culture and cultural diversity to our community.

So, in closing, I want to thank the Grand Forks community for allowing me the privilege of serving them these past many years, and I hope they appreciate everything Altru Health System provides to our community.
