GRAND FORKS — With its "welcome to the neighborhood" theme, Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar has long been a fixture in the south end of Grand Forks.

The restaurant is a handy place to meet for lunch. During the afternoon, it’s a place where people meet to eat and talk. And the evening customers include those who seek dinner steaks, ribs, chicken and seafood.

My trips to Applebee’s are often inspired by my hankering for a late lunch and an order of Oriental Chicken Salad ($12.79). This salad is a long-running favorite with Asian greens, rice noodles and almonds tossed in a vinaigrette. It was also the choice of my daughter, Gail Hagerty (GH) who was visiting from Bismarck.

Our server told us his name was Logan. He is cool and collected as he goes about his work. While he is comfortable at his work, there are “now hiring” signs around. And the restaurant, like others, finds it difficult to find enough servers. Nick Eley, the manager for 15 years, says staffing is not too bad, but he says it has been a struggle. He employs dozens of students, all part time. The highest paid can make up to $18 an hour. And he said serving is usually wrapped up by 10 p.m.

Seating at Applebee’s is pleasant with booths around the exterior windows and usually a choice of area for customers. Many have their favorite booths. The parking lot is extensive.

Delivery and takeout make up about 38% of the business for Applebee’s, according to the manager. He notes the toll on business when many people go to the lakes during the summer months. But he says people are still ordering and drinking. There was more business on Father’s Day. And he figures there will be more people around with welcome activities for the new school year at UND.

Steaks, ribs, chicken, seafood, salad and pasta are featured on Applebee’s menus. The varied menu provides choices for groups.

For those who don’t have to count calories, there are desserts waiting. One of them is a triple chocolate meltdown with 840 calories for $6.49.

Others are moderate, such as a brownie bite with ice cream for $1.59.
