THIEF RIVER FALLS -- I had to turn in my regular flip phone for a smartphone several months ago. Before that, my cell-phone bill had been exactly the same for many months.
Then a curious thing happened: Up went the monthly billing, sometimes by a lot and sometimes by less.
It turns out that the clever little smartphone was going online periodically while it was carried around in my pocket, and my cell phone bill reflected all the charges.
I went to my dealer and requested that all online services be deactivated. My request was honored, and my monthly bill now has returned to its proper amount.
If Herald readers need only good old-fashioned telephone service with their smartphones, I recommend they do the same thing.
