Ruth E. Holweger

Ruth E. Holweger, 86, of Grand Forks, ND went home to the Lord on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Valley Senior Living, Woodside Village in Grand Forks.

Ruth Eileen Adams was born on April 22, 1935, the daughter of Joseph and Caroline (Leddige) Adams. Ruth was born, in a car on the way from Reynolds, ND to the hospital. All her siblings were born at home and delivered by midwives. However, Caroline felt they needed to go to the hospital with Ruth, so she took some provisions with her. The couple was driving down a very muddy road and suddenly the car slipped into a ditch. Ruth always told people she was born in a gutter until a friend of hers said, no not a gutter, you were born in a ditch. Her family always had a laugh over that.

She was raised on the family farm west of Reynolds and attended rural school. At the age of 12, she moved with her family to Grand Forks and Ruth attended St. Michael’s Catholic School and graduated from St. James Academy. Ruth married Vincent Holweger on November 12, 1953, in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks. Ruth chose to be a stay-at-home mother and homemaker. Her life’s vocation was that of wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. Vincent preceded her in death in 1984.

After raising her children, Ruth was first employed as a secretary with Alden Braseth Plumbing and Heating and later the North Dakota School for the Blind and retired in 2001, as a secretary with the Economics Department of the University of North Dakota. Following her retirement, she volunteered at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and St. Mary’s Church.

Ruth was devoted to God and her Catholic Faith. She was a longtime and active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks. For decades, Ruth served as a Cantor at the Sunday Liturgies and Funeral Liturgies and was a dedicated member of the church choir. Also, she served as a Eucharistic Minister and brought communion to the sick and homebound.

She is survived by her sons, Steven Holweger, Edina, MN, Dana (Judy) Holweger, Grand Forks, ND; daughters, Catherine (Steve) Wigness, Chanhassen, MN, Janice (Bruce) Ford, Cando, ND and Mindi (Jeff) Manley, Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
