John Joseph Tupa
John Joseph Tupa, 87, of Thompson, ND, passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021, in Woodside Village, Valley Senior Living on 42nd, Grand Forks, ND.
John was born on March 19, 1934, the son of Frank and Adela (Kerian) Tupa on the family farm near Veseleyville, ND. He attended school through the eighth grade in Veseleyville. He moved with his family to Minto, ND, and graduated from Minto High School in 1953. John went on to graduate from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1960. While living in Grand Forks, John met Connie Eickenbrock at a Policemen’s Ball. John and Connie were married on August 28, 1965, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Wales, ND. The family lived in Grand Forks until 1973 when they moved to Thompson.
John was employed at Implement Dealers Mutual Insurance Company (American West) for 44 years. He started in the mail room at the age of 19 while attending college and continued with the company after earning his degree. He worked as an underwriter and in several management positions. He retired from the company in 1997 as Executive Vice President.
Following his retirement, John and Connie continued to reside in Thompson and enjoyed taking many road trips throughout the United States. He was a member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Thompson, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus. John was a proud Rotarian for many years and was honored to be the Grand Forks Noon Rotary Club’s President in 1980. John’s happiest times were spent with Connie, their children, and grandchildren celebrating special events, holidays and all the days in between. He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards and board games. John remained a loyal University of North Dakota sports fan, always excited to cheer on teams from his alma mater.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Connie; his children, Lori Morgan, Thompson, ND, Karen (Michael) Jablon, Fargo, ND, David (Emily) Tupa, Fargo, ND, Cathy (Eric) Stromberg, Eagan, MN; grandchildren, Katie (Matthew) Hillestad, Kacey (Alex) Hylen, Maisy, Ethan, and Anna Jablon, William and Grace Tupa, Addie and Elly Stromberg; siblings, David (Joyce) Tupa, Golden Valley, MN, Edward (Vernie) Tupa, Tucson, AZ, Clarence Tupa, Mandan, ND, Eva (Charlie) Fjeld, Ham Lake, MN; brother-in-law, John Meagher, Grand Forks, ND; sisters-in-law, Shirley McCracken, Buckeye, AZ, Harriet Dosmann, Grafton, ND; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Margaret Meagher; sister-in-law, Nancy Tupa; brothers-in-law, Bill McCracken and Lyle Dosmann; and nephew, Tom Meagher.
John’s family requests that memorials be given to St. Jude’s Cemetery Fund, St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 329 Broadway, Thompson, ND 58278 or Thompson Community Food Pantry, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 701 Broadway Thompson, ND 58278.
Memorial Mass: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Thompson, ND.
Family Greeting: One hour prior to the Memorial Mass, 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Inurnment: St. Jude’s Catholic Cemetery, Thompson, ND.
