Florence May Klemmer
Florence May Klemmer, surrounded by family, reached through the bonds of this world, embracing our Lord Jesus Christ on the morning of June 3rd, 2019. Her 80 years on this earth started in Bismarck North Dakota on February 23, 1939. She was the third of nine children born to Lawrence and Barbara Gabel.
Florence attended school in Bismarck, graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1957. She married her life-long partner, Charles Klemmer on September 7, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bismarck. They were blessed with nine children, raising seven of them to adulthood. Florence was mostly a homemaker while she had children at home. As her youngest children entered grade school she kept an in-home daycare for mostly neighborhood families, still keeping in touch with many of them through birthday cards and Facebook. She took jobs at Food Bonanza, Hugo’s, and managed the “demo” department at the Grand Forks Sam’s Club for several years.
Florence’s artful hands transformed bleach-white ceramic figurines into bright and colorful personalities. Her family and friends will remember and cherish the banks, Christmas villages and characters, crafted with love and purpose for each recipient. Her gifted hands made warm afghans, keeping her loved-ones warm. Florence was a night-owl, making cross-stitch wall hangings to accent walls. Florence was an avid reader of romance novels, sharing her books with her daughters and others. She filled quiet times with a book in one hand and a French-vanilla cappuccino in the other.
Florence and Chuck spent much of their retirement years traveling to visit family for little more than the chance to catch up, but never missing a wedding, graduation or funeral of a relative. Auntie Florence was loved and will be remembered because of her commitment to her brothers, sisters and their children.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Pauline Pierce and Mary Mees; her brothers, Lawrence, Alfred and Kenny; and her two children, Vicki and Kenneth.
She leaves behind her loving husband of almost 62 years, Chuck, her children, Keith (Evelyn) Klemmer of Roseburg, OR, Kevin (Deb) Klemmer of Bismarck, ND, Carol (Steven) Gurule of Hankinson, ND, Kendall (Wendy) Klemmer of Grand Forks, ND, Karla (Craig) Solberg of Sioux Falls, SD, Kurtis Klemmer of East Grand Forks, MN and Kyle Klemmer of Fargo, ND. She is loved by 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
