Dewey J. Garceau Jr.
Dewey J. Garceau Jr., 88, Grand Forks, ND, passed away Monday, November 23, 2020 at Valley Senior Living-Woodside Village.
Dewey Joseph Garceau Jr. was born on September 12, 1932 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Dewey, Sr. and Rose (Yund) Garceau. He was a lifelong resident of Grand Forks, attending St. Michael’s Grade School and St. James High School. Dewey began working at Piggly Wiggly in 1948. He entered the US Army on November 30, 1949 and for a time was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas during the Berlin Crisis. Dewey married Lorraine M. Tatsak on October 30, 1959 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1953. Dewey continued duty with the North Dakota National Guard for 32 years, retiring on January 15, 1986 with the rank of Sgt Major. He continued employment as a grocery clerk, now Hugo’s Family Marketplace, his entire working career. Dewey was a member of the American Legion, Grand Forks, and a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Dewey is survived by sons, Jon, Grand Forks, ND and Timothy, Atlanta, GA; sisters, Alice Waxvick and Shirley Garceau, both of Grand Forks, ND; brothers, Myron and Dennis, both of Grand Forks, ND, Kenny, Thief River Falls, MN, and Arthur, Fargo, ND.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine, on August 15, 2015; sister, Rose Kiefat; and brother, Hubert.
Mass of Christian Burial: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND. Due to COVID-19, social distancing and masks are required.
Visitation: Tuesday, December 1, 2020 from 6 to 7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. Rosary and a 7:00 p.m. vigil service in the Historic Norman Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy in the church Wednesday.
Burial: Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND
Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota Army National Guard.
