Abner Sampson Jr.
Abner Sampson Jr., age 98, resident of Edmore, ND, died Thursday, June 18, 2020 at Eventide Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake, ND.
Abner Sampson Jr. was born June 3, 1922 in Triumph Township, south of Edmore, ND, the oldest son of Abner and Mabel (Trimble) Sampson. He attended grade school in Triumph Township and high school in Edmore, graduating in 1940 as valedictorian of his class. He worked on his father’s farm and for several neighbors until he began farming with his brother Milton in 1945. His younger brother, Clark, joined the partnership later. Abner married Jacquelyn “Jackie” (Dahlen) Hanson on October 7, 1977. They made their home in Edmore where Abner loved to spend time taking care of their large garden and lawn in the summer.
Abner was active in the community. He served as township supervisor for many years and president of the Edmore Curling Club when the new facility was built in 1963. He was a member of the Edmore Curling Club and curled for many years. He was also a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Edmore. Abner enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, watching the Minnesota Twins, and spending time with his family.
Abner will be greatly missed by his 2 brothers, Frank of Boulder, CO, and Clark (Lou) of Edmore; 2 step-daughters, Carol (Lyle) Anderson of Orting, WA, and Betty (LeRoy) Howes of Edmore; 7 grandchildren, Carrie, Michael, Janelle, Rick, Becky, Sheila, and Jennifer; 16 great-grandchildren; 5 nephews, Lloyd, Dan, Bruce, Owen, and Ned; 3 nieces, Beth, Christine, and Ellen; and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jackie; his step-son, Melvin “Mickey” Hanson Jr.; grandson, Brian Hanson; and 2 brothers, Milton and Douglas.
Visitation will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church of Edmore on Thursday, June 25, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Edmore Cemetery on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
