Irene Mozinski, 94, of Portland, OR, formerly a long time resident of the Minto, ND area, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2019 in Portland, OR
Irene Helen Stoltman was born in Walshville Township, Walsh Co., ND on September 18, 1924 to Adam and Frances (Danielski) Stoltman. She was the oldest of five children, her siblings were Connie, Harold, Joe and Cyril Stoltman. She attended grade school in Pulaski Township and graduated from Oslo, MN high school in 1942. She lived and worked for several years in Detroit, MI during the war. On February 25, 1946 Irene was united in marriage to Steven Mozinski, who had recently been discharged from the US Navy, having served four years during World War II, most notably in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. They made their home near Warsaw, ND where they raised their three children, Kathryn, Steve Jr. and Mary Louise; foster daughters, Dawn and Shellee Sigfusson joined the Mozinski family in 1967. She and Steve lived on their family farm for 51 years, then moved to Minto in 1997, where Irene lived for 18 years. In 2015 she moved to Portland, OR to be close to her children.
Irene was a life long member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw where she served on the Altar Society and the Rosary Society, leading the rosary in church for many years. She was also a founding member of the County Gals Homemaker's Club, which was in existence for 50+ years and a member of the Minto American Legion Auxiliary, Minto Golden Age Senior Club and PNA (Polish National Alliance).
Irene was a woman of strong faith devoted to family and community. She was kind, cheerful, positive, frugal, and an original conservationist and environmentalist when it wasn't even yet popular. She wasn't afraid of work and even joked that her husband Steve married her because she was a good worker! She was a woman of her word and could be counted on to the right thing. She was a member of the "Greatest Generation". But, she was also a friendly, fun and curious person, never taking herself too seriously and always up for a card game, bingo, search-a-word, and even dominoes. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, sewing, cooking and baking, often trying new ideas learned through the Homemakers Club! And her skills were excellent, winning admiration from family and friends, and numerous awards at the County Fair. A strong matriarch of the family, and a pillar in the community, she was very loved and is greatly missed.
Surviving are her children Kathryn (Henry) Piertzak of Moorhead, MN and Mesa, AZ; Steve (Cheryl) Mozinski of Portland, OR; Mary (Doug) Ziebart of Portland, OR; foster daughters Dawn Sigfusson and Shellee Hoyt of Jamestown, ND; 3 grandsons Tony (Janna) Pietrzak, Steve (Jenn) Mozinski and Mike Mozinski; 5 great grandchildren and other extended-family step and foster grand and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
If life could be compared to the game of Survivor on TV, Irene would have been the ultimate winner. She was the last survivor of her immediate family, being preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Connie, Harold, Joe and Cyril (Kay) Stoltman; husband Steve in 2003 and his Mozinski siblings (Florian, Sarah, Frances, Frankie and Henry) and their spouses; and grandson, Kris Pietrzak.
A funeral Mass will be held 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 19 at St. Clare Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon. A memorial mass will be held in June at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, ND with interment at St. Stanislaus Church cemetery.
