Michael Bruce (Mick) Gates

Michael Bruce (Mick) Gates

Mick was born July 12, 1946 in Minot, ND to Robert and Lela (Blowers) Gates. He was raised one-mile South of Loraine, ND and attended Loraine School through the sixth grade. He graduated from Mohall High School in 1964, then attended NDSU for one year before transferring to NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND to get a Civil Engineering Technology degree.

He worked for Twin City Testing in Minneapolis for a short time, then moved back to the Lansford, ND area to begin farming along with working at Portal Pipe Line and Twin City Testing out of Minot. He made farming his full-time occupation in the late 60's, having moved to the Blowers homestead Northwest of Lansford.

While farming, he loved to build things in his shop, mostly farm equipment he could use himself, which led to building some of those same things for other farmers, and the birth of Gates Manufacturing, Inc. in the mid 1980's. He farmed until the mid 90's then devoted 100% of his work time to the manufacturing business until his retirement from it in 2010. He was very active in attending many farm shows where he garnered some of the best ideas from his lifelong customers, some of which became good friends. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Lansford, National Farm Organization (NFO), ND Ag Products Utilization Commission, ND Trade Office, Blaine Township Board, Lansford Country Club, Mohall JC's, plus he worked on promoting ethanol production from ND grain, which led to his passionate hobby of making "the best run ever". He enjoyed hunting, spending time at Lake Metigoshe, annual trips to the Big Iron Farm show in Fargo, home brewing his "White Lightning", and recently spending winters in the Parker Arizona area.
