Cornelius J. "Con" Whalen
Cornelius J. "Con" Whalen, 88, Grand Forks, ND passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Valley Elder Care Center in Grand Forks surrounded by his family.
Con was born the son of Con and Sarah (Law) Whalen on July 27, 1929 at St. Michael's Hospital in Grand Forks. He attended St. Michael's and St. James Schools in Grand Forks and St. John's University. He received both his BSC and Master's in Accounting from the University of North Dakota. Con married Kathleen O'Toole on December 30, 1952 and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage until her death in 2013.
He served in the United States Air Force and worked as a tax manager at Arthur Anderson for 8 years before joining the accounting faculty at Bowling Green University, returning to Grand Forks and spending 24 years as a professor in the accounting department at the University of North Dakota.
Con was a member of several accounting boards including the AICPA serving on the education committee; the NDSCPA for 50 years being awarded Life Membership, serving on several committees, including the board of directors and as President of the North Dakota Society of CPA's. He was appointed to the State Board of Accountancy serving as President. One of his greatest honors was receiving the Accounting Hall of Fame award from UND.
He established an accounting firm with sons, Tim and Brian and worked there until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Parish where he served as acolyte, accountant, lector and trustee. Con will be remembered as a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed traveling and especially attending family activities.
Con is survived by sons, Timothy (Ramona), Grand Forks, ND, Daniel (Susan), Stillwater, MN, Kevin (Michele), New Brighton, MN, Brian (Pam), Grand Forks, ND, Neil (Kathy), Hutchinson, MN; by daughters, Colleen (Scott) Dennison, Grand Forks, ND, Mary Whalen, New Brighton, MN and Sheila (Todd) Zimprich, Sioux Falls, SD; 21 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Kate McCartan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; parents; an infant grandchild, Thomas Dennison; a sister, Sally Ann and a brother, Patrick.

Mass of Christian Burial: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018 in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service at the Historic Norman Funeral Home Chapel, S. Washington St. Grand Forks. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy at the church on Saturday.
Burial: Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.
Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the Grand Forks Air Force Base Honor Guard.
