Dan Sundquist of Crookston released this 44-inch northern pike during the recent fishing opener on Lake of the Woods.

“We were fishing in 18 feet with jigs and minnows,” Sundquist writes. “I had put my rod down with the bait still a little off the bottom to help my wife with pictures of her catch when I looked back to see my rod tip bending out of the boat.

“I set the hook and the fight was on. Under the boat, around the trolling motor and pulling the drag upwards of 35 yards from the boat. This pike measured 44 inches in length with a 17-inch girth. We safely released this one back to the water.”
