Bohl lifts Minot Ryan to win over New Rockford-Sheyenne at Class B boys state basketball tournament
MINOT, N.D. -- Ben Bohl buried a pair of very long, clutch 3-pointers to help the Minot Bishop Ryan Lions hold off New Rockford-Sheyenne 62-56 Thursday, March 14, in a first-round game of the Class B boys state basketball tournament at the Minot State Dome.
Bohl, who finished with 29 points, hit the biggest from 25 feet out with 44 seconds left after the Rockets had clawed to within 55-52 with 1 minute, 16 seconds remaining.
What do you do when a player does that?
“Our guy was right there with a hand in his face,” New Rockford-Sheyenne head coach Tyler Cook said. “When a guy makes a shot like that when you’re contesting it, you slap him on the butt and say, ‘Great shot.’”
Bohl and Mason Hedberg made a series of great shots that were just enough to keep the the Rockets from fully coming back after taking their last lead with 5:28 to play in the second quarter.
“It seemed like every time we got close, Ben Bohl would come up with another big shot and push us back again,” Cook said.
Bohl made 12 of 28 shots and four 3-pointers, many of the long shots. Hedberg added 21 points for Lions.
Ryan head coach Jeremy Feller had seen that performance from Bohl and Hedberg before.
“Our regional championship game they went 10 for 15 in the second half,” Feller said. “They feel comfortable … When they’re in a groove you just hope it goes in.”
Minot Ryan (23-3) will play Thompson in Friday night’s semifinal game. It will be the second meeting between the two, the first won by the Tommies 73-57. The game will pit the 15-time qualifier Ryan against the top-ranked team in the state playing in its first state tournament.
Theodore Allmaras led the Rockets in scoring before fouling out with 16 points. Hunter Thompson added 14 and Tucker Longnecker 12 for the Rockets.
