THE FOCUS

Denver lost superstar forwards Henrik Borgstrom, Troy Terry and Dylan Gambrell to NHL deals after last season. The Pioneers also lost a fourth forward early when Logan O'Connor signed with the Avalanche late in the summer. So, this year's freshman class came at a good time for the Pioneers. Denver's rookies are averaging 4.17 points per game, easily the best in the nation. Playmaking forward Emilio Pettersen and Montreal draft pick Brett Stapley are averaging a point per game. Goal-scorer Cole Guttman has seven goals and 11 points in 12 games.

THE PICK

Denver has been forced to play at a high level for a month now. Its last three series have been against teams ranked No. 2, No. 4 and No. 10 in this week's USCHO poll. The Pioneers now have two healthy goalies as well. With UND still dealing with a significant number of injuries up front, it will need to use the blueprint from Saturday to try to grab a win against the Pioneers: good goaltending, strong defense and timely scoring from UND's top line.

Denver 3-1, UND 3-2

NOTES

**** Warroad's Gigi Marvin has been named to the NWHL All-Star Game in Nashville on Feb. 10. Marvin has a league-high six goals and nine points in seven games for the Boston Pride. Marvin was a gold medalist on USA's 2018 Olympic team.

****Former UND defenseman Halli Krzyzaniak was named to the CWHL All-Star Game. Krzyzaniak, a Canadian National Team member, played four years at UND.

**** Former UND defenseman Derek Forbort played in his 200th NHL game on Sunday night for the Los Angeles Kings. Forbort is averaging 19:57 time on ice per game for the Kings. He has five assists this season.

**** November was a big month for sons (and a grandson) of former UND hockey players. The NCHC's forward of the month was Mason Morelli, the son of Matt and grandson of Reg. The NCHC's rookie of the month was Taylor Ward, the son of Dixon. Both play for Omaha. Morelli had five goals and 12 points in seven games. Ward had 10 points in seven games.

**** Nick Schmaltz, the first-line center of UND's 2016 NCAA title team, is fitting into his new home just fine. Schmaltz has five points in his first four games with the Coyotes, including a game-winning goal. The Coyotes are perfect in that time. One of Nick's games came against his older brother, Jordan, who is with the St. Louis Blues. Nick was traded from Chicago to Arizona last week.

**** How important has Wade Allison been to Western Michigan's success? During Allison's career, the Broncos are 37-20-5 (.637) when he's in the lineup and 8-18-2 (.321) when he's out of the lineup. Western Michigan is 4-0 with him this season.
