Passenger killed, driver arrested after ATV crash in central Minnesota

GENOLA, Minn. -- A 37-year-old Rice woman was killed Saturday, Oct. 6, when an all-terrain vehicle she was a passenger on crashed on the Soo-Line Trail in central Minnesota near Genola.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was called at 8:17 p.m. to a side-by-side ATV crash. It was reported a 45-year-old Royalton man was operating the ATV, which was traveling west on the Soo-Line Trail. After crossing the intersection of 280th Avenue near Genola, the ATV rolled. A passenger, Karla Scheel, was ejected from the ATV and trapped underneath. Scheel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Royalton man was taken into custody and to the Morrison County Jail, pending formal charges for criminal vehicular operation.

Genola is east of Little Falls and about 30 miles north of St. Cloud.
