‘Minnesota Rust’ opens in McIntosh

Andrea Stordahl has opened an antiques and vintage shop, “Minnesota Rust,” in McIntosh, Minn.

She hosted a grand opening Friday at the shop at 120 Cleveland Ave.

The shop features antiques and vintage items, gifts, decor items and “what I would call upscale vintage, salvage, industrial -- things you can mix with new stuff in the home,” Stordahl said.

The store will be open on an occasional basis and she plans to next open it from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 and 15, she said, and then possibly two weekends a month starting in October.

It is also open anytime by appointment.

With this new shop, Stordahl is helping to revitalize the community’s downtown business district.

“We renovated an old bakery that’s been empty forever,” she said.

When she and her husband moved back to McIntosh from the Fargo-Moorhead area two years ago, “we opened a little store on a whim,” Stordahl said. She and Bryce Stordahl, who grew up on a farm near McIntosh, have two children, Adler, 3, and Jens, 4.

The store’s first location “was in a dilapidated building attached to an auto body shop on Highway 2 and Cleveland Avenue,” she said. “We used it for storage, but people started coming in to shop.”

The store was cited by a national magazine as “one of the top shops in Minnesota” for repurposed items, she said. “It was us, and everyone else was in the Twin Cities.”

“One of our customers posted (the article) on my Minnesota Rust website.”

The shop gained attention from Stordahl’s participation in the popular Junk Bonanza event in the Twin Cities, she said. “We developed our following at that show. All our customers started coming from there.”

Interest in her shop has been growing, she said.

“People from all over the U.S. have come in.”
