Police looking for registered sex offender from Grand Forks
Grand Forks police are looking for a registered sex offender who had been jailed for possessing child porn.
A news release said Roger Lee Whaley, 87, may have removed his GPS monitoring device and fled the Grand Forks area, where he moved to after being released from the James River Correctional Center in Jamestown, N.D. He had been living in the basement of a residence at 18 N. Washington St.
Whaley was sentenced in January 2017 in Grand Forks District Court to 16 months in jail after pleading guilty to 10 counts of possessing certain materials prohibited by law. Investigators said they found a SanDisk in Whaley's computer that contained images of children between the ages of 1 and 9 years being sexually assaulted by adults.
He could have faced up to 50 years in prison, but he was released after serving less than a year of his jail time. He's required to register as a lifetime sex offender and is listed at a high level of reoffending.
Police said he may be traveling in a green 2003 Subaru Outback with North Dakota plates that say 915 CCS. He has short white hair, glasses and is Caucasian.
Anyone with information on Whaley are asked to call the Grand Forks Police Department at (701) 787-8000.
