Airman at Grand Forks AFB charged with rape

Karim Sabur Kabir Muhammad

An airman assigned to Grand Forks Air Force Base has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a woman at his Grand Forks apartment last month.

Karim Sabur Kabir Muhammad, 22, has been charged with gross sexual imposition, a Class A felony, for allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse with an intoxicated and incapacitated woman on Oct. 8.

Charges against Muhammad were filed Wednesday, court records show. He was arrested on a warrant the same day and made an initial court appearance Thursday morning.

The victim, a 23-year-old woman, reported the incident to police Oct. 9, the day after the alleged assault. She told detectives she had been out drinking in downtown Grand Forks and eventually ended up in Muhammad’s apartment in the 3500 block of 40th Avenue South. She said she fell asleep and awoke to Muhammad having sexual intercourse with her, according to an affidavit.

A detective interviewed Muhammed on Oct. 13, and wrote that Muhammad admitted to knowing the woman was too intoxicated to consent, the affidavit states. Muhammad also reportedly admitted to detectives he was aware the victim was unconscious during the intercourse.

Class A felony charges are punishable by up to 20 years in prison in North Dakota. Muhammad’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 18. He is currently listed as representing himself in the case.
