Ryan Zerr has been named director of UND's general education program.
The announcement was made Thursday through the school's online newsletter.
Tom Steen founded and led Essential Studies, as it has been called after a 2008 retooling, and will retire at the end of this school year.
A November 2014 review prompted forums to gather feedback on how to improve courses and communication within the program.
Zerr has been at UND since 2003, led University Senate last school year and serves as associate chair of the Mathematics Department.

"I'm excited to collaborate with the entire university community to advance this important pillar of UND's undergraduate student experience," Zerr said in the announcement.
