DULUTH, Minn. -- A Florida man traveling the wrong way on U.S. Highway 61 about 20 miles north of Duluth was killed in a head-on crash Saturday night, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Philip Bergerson, 63, of Bonita Springs, Fla., was northbound in the southbound lanes just before 11 p.m. and struck a southbound car. The driver of the struck vehicle, Cole Drechsler, 20, of Cloquet, suffered serious injuries. His passenger, Sarah Buscher, 19, also of Cloquet, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. All, including Bergerson, were wearing seatbelts. Drechsler and Buscher were brought to Duluth hospitals, and as of Monday morning Drechsler was listed in critical condition at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center.

No alcohol was detected related to Drechsler, and it isn’t yet known whether it was a factor with Bergerson.

The accident happened near Knife River.
