WOMEN: Gophers roll by Sioux

MINNEAPOLIS - No. 6 Minnesota scored three goals in the second period, one on a power play and another shorthanded, en route to a 5-1 women's Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory against UND on Saturday in Ridder Arena.

Bobbi Ross scored two goals to fuel the Minnesota offense.

Ross scored at 10 minutes, 18 seconds of the first period for a 1-0 lead.

Gigi Marvin, a former Warroad (Minn.) High School standout, scored at 4:35 of the second for a 2-0 lead. Just 5:59 later, Jen Schoullis scored on a power play for Minnesota.

Kelsey Fletcher scored the lone UND goal on a 4-on-3 advantage to bring the Sioux within two.

But Ross answered just 1:07 later, scoring on a helper from Rachael Drazan. Brittany Francis scored at 6:29 of the third period for the final margin.

The Sioux were 1-for-9 on power-play chances.

The Gophers (8-4-1 overall, 6-4-1 WCHA) had a 39-17 edge in shots on goal. The Sioux (2-9-4, 2-5-2) were outshot 14-3 in the first period.

UND goalie Brittany Kirkham finished with 34 saves. Minnesota goaltender Kim Hanlon had 16 stops.

The teams meet at 3:07 p.m. today in Ridder Arena.
