GRAFTON, N.D. - A woman was shot in the leg during a break-in at her home here Tuesday morning, according to police.

Her injuries were not life-threatening.

Assistant Chief of Police Anthony Dumas said no one has been taken into custody, but investigators have identified a “person of interest.” They do not believe the person of interest and the victim knew each other, he said, but did not name them.

“We don’t feel the public is in any imminent danger,” he said.

Officers arrived at the victim’s house at 441 Western Ave. at about 11:10 a.m. and found the homeowner with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Joshua Lovell, who lives a few blocks away, said he heard a bang. “I thought it was a firecracker or something.”

He said he was a little shaken by the shooting because he has three young children.

The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Walsh County Sheriff’s Office, the state Highway Patrol and U.S. Border Patrol have been working with Grafton Police on the investigation.

“At this point we’re working every lead we have,” Dumas said.

Grafton, a town of 4,300, is about 40 miles by road from Grand Forks.
