A woman who sued Roseau County, Minn., claiming a sheriff's deputy injured her and violated her civil rights, has been awarded a settlement of $275,000, County Attorney Lisa Hanson said.
Shelly Suronen, 47, got into a physical altercation with the deputy, Chad Maurstad, when he tried to seize a vehicle in July 2008 at a home in Badger, Minn., Hanson told the Herald on Friday.
Suronen alleged her arms were injured when Maurstad handcuffed her, Hanson said.
An independent investigation found that Maurstad acted improperly and used excessive force during the incident. Sheriff Jule Hanson subsequently fired Maurstad.
In addition to the county, Maurstad and the sheriff were named as defendants in the suit. As part of the settlement, none of them admitted responsibility for Suronen's claims.

Roseau County's insurance carrier, the Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust, has agreed to pay the settlement.
