Melting snow freezing overnight also contributed to icy roadways.

Grand Forks and much of northeastern North Dakota and northwestern and north central Minnesota are no longer under National Weather Service winter storm warnings or advisories as much of the region has so far avoided heavy snowfall from the winter storm.

But not all areas avoided significant snow. Devils Lake was forecast to receive as much as a foot or two of snow during the storm, although exact totals weren't available early this morning. Cooperstown received about 6 inches of snow on Wednesday.

A winter storm warning remains in effect on a band west of Devils Lake in North Dakota extending from Rugby southeast to Harvey, Jamestown and east to Fargo. A winter weather advisory is still in effect across the border in Minnesota west of Detroit Lakes from Moorhead down to the Fergus Falls area.

Both the winter storm warning and winter weather advisory are scheduled to end at 9 a.m. this morning as snowfall is gradually tapering off this morning.

A band of snow from central North Dakota will continue to move slowly into west central Minnesota.

Snowfall is slowing in the Devils Lake region this morning, but light snow is forecast to continue falling over parts of the southern Red River Valley and west central Minnesota through mid morning.

Some roads in central and eastern North Dakota remain covered by snow and ice, making travel hazardous in some areas.

A number of North Dakota school districts west of the North Dakota-Minnesota border are delaying buses and the start of school by two hours this morning, including: Adams-Edmore, Devils Lake public (buses where possible), Griggs County Central, Lakota, Maddock, Munich, North Star in Cando (no buses), St. Joseph in Devils Lake (buses where possible), Dakota Prairie. Lake Region State College in Devils Lake is opening at 10 a.m. this morning.

School has been canceled today in Minnewaukan, Midkota and at Four Winds Community School in Fort Totten.
