Winnipeg mom scolded for breastfeeding in public gets apology from mayor

WINNIPEG -- Winnipeg's mayor has apologized to a mother who was scolded by a staff member at a city-owned swimming pool for breastfeeding her infant daughter in public.

WINNIPEG -- Winnipeg's mayor has apologized to a mother who was scolded by a staff member at a city-owned swimming pool for breastfeeding her infant daughter in public.

Jenna Baker says she was at Pan Am Pool May 10 when she fed her baby while sitting in a chair about a metre from the water following her infant's morning swim class.

Baker says she was later told by a staff member that pool patrons were complaining about her breastfeeding in a public area and that her actions were "offensive."

The incident was reviewed and Mayor Sam Katz apologized to the woman on Wednesday -- the same day the Manitoba Human Rights Commission offered to work with the city on an educational campaign about breastfeeding in public facilities.

Baker says she's received a lot of support from local women, and close to 100 nursing mothers have expressed interest in participating in a mass nurse-in at Pan Am Pool Friday night.

The apology comes a week after the City of Ottawa apologized to a woman, Danielle Dezort, who was reprimanded by a lifeguard for breastfeeding her three-month-old son at a public pool. (Winnipeg Free Press)
