Strong southerly winds contributed to a Dickinson, N.D., woman getting injured when she lost control of a truck that tipped over west of Devils Lake Sunday.

Katie Splichal, 53, was taken to Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol. She later was transferred to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, where her condition was not immediately available Sunday evening.

According to the Highway Patrol, Splichal was driving west on state Highway 19, about six miles west of Minnewaukan, N.D., headed to Bismarck, at 2:25 p.m. Sunday.

Minnewaukan is 24 miles southwest of Devils Lake.

As the winds blew the 2005 International straight truck into the north ditch, she over-corrected in steering it hard left to get it back on the road.

The truck tipped on its right side and slid down the road.

Splichal was partly ejected through the passenger window and was pinned under the truck. She had to be extricated.

She was not wearing a seat belt.

Winds gusted to 35 mph and higher Sunday afternoon in the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The Benson County Sheriff's Department and fire departments from Minnewaukan and Maddock responded to the accident.
