Melting snow freezing overnight also contributed to icy roadways.

A powerful arctic front is bringing dangerous wind chills of 30 to 40 below to the region today.

A National Weather Service winter weather advisory for blowing snow and dangerous wind chills remains in effect until noon today for eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota. A wind chill advisory will be in effect from noon until 6 p.m.

Northwest winds of 15-25 mph will produce blowing and drifting snow throughout the Red River Valley and Devils Lake basin this morning, especially in open areas. Visibility will be reduced to less than a mile in some places.

Winds are expected to slowly dissipate this afternoon, but air temperatures will still fall into the teens below zero.

Those traveling are asked to wear warm winter clothing and carry a winter survival kit.
