You definitely won't be wrong to call today "windy."

Sustained westerly winds of 30 to 40 mph, with higher gusts, will dominate today's Red River Valley weather from mid-morning until later tonight, the National Weather Service says.

And it'll have an impact on large bodies of water.

Waves on Devils Lake are expected today to build up to 7 to 9 feet this afternoon, to 4 to 6 feet on Upper and Lower Red Lake and to 3 to 5 feet on Lake of the Woods.

It could be worse; western and central North Dakota are expecting stronger winds still and are under a high wind warning.

The cause, according to a weather service statement, is a deep system of low pressure that will move into Manitoba and Ontario today, "leaving a tight pressure gradient over the Northern Plains."

Winds should begin to diminish late this evening.

Travel will be hazardous for high-profile vehicles.

The wind advisory stretches from Cando and Towner County east to Roseau and Roseau County, and south into eastern South Dakota and much of Minnesota.

The cities of Bottineau, Rugby, Harvey, Jamestown and Ashley are in the high wind warning area.
