WILLMAR, Minn. -- A 29-year-old Willmar man made his first court appearance Tuesday for allegedly threatening his former companion with a knife Sunday after finding the woman's boyfriend hiding in her home.
Jose Oswaldo Moreno also faces a misdemeanor domestic assault charge in Kandiyohi County District Court. Unconditional bail was set at $20,000. Conditional release was allowed on his personal recognizance. He must also have no contact with the woman or her residence and possess no weapons or firearms. His next court date is July 19.
According to the complaint, Willmar police were called around 11:30 a.m. Sunday to a home in the city's northwest quadrant on a domestic. A woman, with whom Moreno had a relationship, reported he'd come to the home and knocked on the door. The woman said she let him. She said Moreno saw that the bedroom door was locked and suspected her boyfriend was hiding inside. When she refused to open the door, Moreno kicked it in, revealing a man inside the room.
The woman said Moreno got upset and picked up a 10-inch folding blade knife, which had been holding the door closed, and waved it around. She said he pointed the knife at her and that she felt threatened. The knife was located by officers.
Moreno was interviewed and allegedly admitted to entering the home, kicking in the door and holding the knife.
