West Fargo Mayor Rich Mattern is endorsing Republican challenger Rick Berg in North Dakota's U.S. House race, the campaign announced today.

"Rick is a natural leader who has created jobs in the private sector and balanced budgets at the state level," Mattern said in a statement provided by the campaign. "It's because of great leadership in state government that North Dakota outshines all other states. It makes sense to send ... Rick Berg to Washington."

Dickinson Mayor Dennis Johnson and former Fargo Mayor Bruce Furness also have endorsed Berg, the campaign said.

The Fargo legislator is in a close race against nine-term Democratic incumbent Earl Pomeroy.

For his part, Pomeroy has the support of current Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker and Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown.
