Light snow was expected to move into the southern Red River Valley by Sunday evening and spread farther north and east overnight.
The National Weather Service said accumulations are expected to be light, with an inch or so possible by this morning. Forecasters said light snow will continue over the region on and off today and Tuesday.
The weather service said the highest accumulations are expected to be in the southern valley and into west central Minnesota, where 3 to 4 inches over a 48-hour period are not out of the question. Lightest snowfall amounts will be near the Canadian border, where less than an inch is expected.
Forecasters said a more significant storm system is possible Friday and Friday night, with strong north winds causing considerable blowing and drifting of snow. Much is uncertain, but near-blizzard conditions are possible. The weather service urged people to stay tuned for further updates.
