The sun will not own the weekend in the Red River region.

Starting today, showers and thunderstorms are expected to find their way over portions of the region.

Saturday is expected to be sunny, though, before another round of precipitation threatens to dampen the summer weekend Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Thunderstorms of the severe variety, though, are most likely on Sunday, when as another cold front moves down into eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service.

The showers and storms today and Saturday night -- after the expected sunny spell during the day Saturday - are not expected to be as strong, particularly in the Red River Valley. But isolated lightning strikes, strong wind gusts and some isolated nickel-size hail are possibilities.
